“Leave your tent at home. There are no sleeping bags, campfires or mosquitoes at Daisy Camp. Instead, enjoy a one-of-a-kind weekend of support and education. In between, you will learn from lawyers, child psychologists, and financial planners. You will be inspired by motivational speakers. You will be empowered by other experts about various aspects of divorce.”
The next Daisy Camp weekend retreat (as opposed to a day retreat) is scheduled for September 20th, 2013.
I was really impressed, when I read the book Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson. This is not your ordinary couples self-help book but is instead a research-based handbook for couples looking to work on their relationship and looking to learn how to make a better connection and avoid old patterns of relationship conflict. I was curious to learn more, because it seemed like a really helpful and important book.
The video below is a Skype conversation that I had with Laura Barbeau, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). She uses Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in her therapy practice and she also teaches a course on EFT based on the book Hold Me Tight.
The class consists of around 8 sessions, 2 hours long each, that discuss the chapters of the book in a group setting. Here, couples converse about issues with the whole class, leaving less time to focus on insignificant details and more time to solve the root of problems that apply to so many couples. Laura believes conflict is present in any relationship and finding a healthy way to approach problems is a skill that will inevitably be useful to any couple.

I’m especially excited about this post about Daisy Camp founder Jennifer Morris. Not only is it regarding a great topic, Daisy Camp. It’s also one of the first interactive videos that we’ve recorded through Skype. We hope this will be a start to a series of interviews with helpful people like Jennifer Morris regarding helpful divorce/separation topics, like Daisy Camp. If you have ideas for future videos, let me know by commenting below or emailing me at arnoldlawandmediation@gmail.com.
In the video, I ask Jennifer Morris how Daisy Camp started, what Daisy Camp is about and who is a typical Daisy Camper, among other questions and answers that will give you a good sense for whether Daisy Camp is right for you!
Daisy Camp was founded in 2006 by Jennifer Morris, a local realtor who emerged from her divorce with a belief that women need more support to help them through this important transition. Jennifer’s unique idea of helping women through a “camping experience” has captured the attention of local and national media and has changed the lives of many women. Today, hundreds of “Daisies’” throughout Minnesota and beyond continue to gather regularly and help each other make the most of their new, “ever-expanding lives”.
While some level of conflict is to be expected in a divorce, does it seem like your divorce centers around a seemingly never-ending elevated level of conflict? Here’s a way to find out whether your concerns are well-founded. In the first video of Brook Olsen’s High Conflict Diversion Program he lists twenty situations including provoking the other partner, not wanting to give the other partner access to the child, and refusing to follow court orders. If your divorce exhibits 5 – 10 of these situations then your divorce is at risk for high conflict or has elevated conflict. 10 or more of the situations apply to you? It’s probably accurate to say that your divorce involves a high level of conflict. Take some comfort in the fact that you’re not alone: 25 to 30% of divorces involve high conflict while 60% are high conflict or at-risk to become high conflict. You can sign up to receive the free videos (don’t worry there are transcripts in the emails if you don’t have time to watch the whole thing!) at highconflict.net. The program sends out videos periodically so we’ll have to wait to see what strategies and solutions the program proposes, since I signed up myself so I could get all their helpful information emailed to me! http://player.vimeo.com/video/7891004

Thinking about filing a motion without using an attorney? This video from the Minnesota State Courts offers helpful information about the steps involved in filing a motion by dividing the process into seven sections. In particular, the video describes how to complete a Motion and Affidavit in Support of Motion, details how to serve the other party by personal service and by mail, and specifies which forms to file with the court. While the video’s dry tone can be boring and perhaps condescending, it’s apparent that the court wants applicants to realize the implications of filing motions incorrectly (including having your case dismissed, paying fines or even paying the other party’s legal fees) and be aware of alternative options such as consulting with an attorney or seeking mediation. If your case is common and straightforward the video could be a helpful resource for going it alone. But if your case is a little more complicated, you might want to consider some of the other options the court suggests.

Jennifer, the founder of DaisyCamp, has a compelling story. From the DaisyCamp website:
In 2005, I went through my divorce. It ended up being a gift, though it was definitely in disguise at the time. I was lost, afraid, hopeless and terribly sad. Out of my own need for help and direction, Daisy Camp was born in 2006.
I discovered that during my divorce there are so many decisions to make, at a time you are least emotionally equipped to make the most important decisions of your life. I was determined to help other woman navigating divorce, so I created Daisy Camp. “D” is for divorce. “D” is for Daisy. Like a daisy, a divorce can signal a fresh start.
Each camp is a treasure chest filled with amazing people. Women attending the camp will begin an incredible journey of finding joy in their ever-expanding life. I am proud to have created such a wonderful program that has changed the lives of so many people and influenced so many families in their healing.
Five years later, my dream of Daisy Camp becoming a non-profit is a reality. And in my life today I am free to be me and all that I am meant to be, free to be happy, free to live, free to love, free to enjoy each moment, free to make space in my life for new beginnings, free to let go…
I invite you to participate in Daisy Camp. I applaud you for your courage in taking a leap of faith to attend Daisy Camp. Daisy Camp will inspire you too!
Love,
Jennifer
